One individual panel holds space for 98 people killed by gunfire in the U.S. But each panel represents so much more. Collectively, people from across the country devote about 24 hours folding the 98 Soul Boxes on each panel. Volunteers in our workshop spend another 8 hours assembling the materials, arranging the Soul Boxes and tying them onto each panel. 

On October 16-17, 2021, in Washington, D.C., we are scheduled to exhibit 365 display panels -  a powerful visual representation of one year of gunfire deaths: 800 linear feet of 4-foot-tall panels displayed under a canopy on the National Mall.  

Visitors will see more than 35,000 unique Soul Boxes, each with a victim’s name, artwork or a message, made by Soul Box-creators from around the country. Over 160,000 additional Soul Boxes representing unknown deaths and injuries will be massed around the display panels. In all, the installation will represent  as many as 200,000 people killed or injured by gunfire in just three years.

During this time when we experience much of the world through a computer screen, The Soul Box Project is revealing the toll of gunfire deaths and injuries in the U.S. with a new virtual exhibit. Visitors are able to see thousands of Soul Boxes up close, experience the magnitude of our gunfire epidemic, and feel the urgency for action. With your support the exhibit will expand every month until one year of gunfire deaths are represented.
