The first large-scale exhibition of 36,000 Soul Boxes – representing the average number of people shot each year in the U.S. – is scheduled for February 15, 2019 in the lobby gallery of the Oregon State Capitol. This date is one day after the first anniversary of the Parkland, Florida school shooting. Led by a drummer’s cadence, a cortege of 72 people will carry clear bags of 500 Soul Boxes into the capitol building. The Oregon State Legislature will be in session, so elected officials, visitors and staff will be confronted with the piles of Soul Boxes. They will be invited to fold their own Soul Boxes and add them to the display. At the end of the day, the Soul Boxes will be removed, again by a procession of people carrying the bags.
